I'm going to be a little less active for about a week here, but it's for an important reason that will hopefully serve at least a few of you who regularly visit my blog!
For the past few years I've been training colleagues around the country in some of the practical aspects of using nutrition to help with fertility. The colleagues I've been working with, as we've gained an understanding of how it all fits together, have been reporting some wonderful success stories in clients who had been told they might never have a child of their own.
As we've grown as a network, we've gained the attention of sponsors, and one of those sponsors, Nutrabella, approached me about collaborating with them to contribute to a fertility report that will be appearing in East Coast newspapers this coming Friday--the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Boston Globe, to name a few. Another sponsor, SGJ Consulting, contributed to the project as well. It's been a great team to work with from start to finish!
That kind of opportunity has the potential to reach quite a few people (2.1 million is what has been projected)! So I've been busy making sure we're ready to handle the traffic and that everyone who's been going through my training is ready to take referrals.
If you know of anyone who is struggling with infertility, please tell them we have several resources: (1) this blog, of course! (2) individual consultations. Many of the professionals listed on this page do contribute to this blog. (3) Fertile Intentions (TM), our new couples infertility spa day experience, in Marina del Rey, California.
This is such a great audience with whom to share the message that there are many options outside of medication for helping with fertility.
I'll be back in about a week, hopefully with some exciting updates, and definitely with more comments on nutrition and mental health. In the meantime, I'm hoping other contributors have some helpful hints and interesting notes!
I am excited to announce that The Cozy Tea Cart will be contributing sample tea's, coupons and tea information to our goody bags for the first 25 registered participants for our Power Up for PCOS 5K fundraiser to benefit Power Up for PCOS and InCYST Institute for Hormone Health. I have personal experience with The Cozy Tea Cart as I am a daily drinker of their signature blend of TCTC Spice. It is a flavored black tea. Here is the description form their website:"A rich, full-bodied Sri-Lankan black tea blended with orange peel, spices, clove oil, and all natural flavoring that is sweetly spicy. This is the perfect tea on a frigid day-- the fragrant, delightful spices will warm you quickly." I used this last fall to quit drinking soda. It is sweet enough that you do not need to add sugar or milk. It tastes great as is, steeped in hot water. Now, let me tell you, I was NOT a tea drinker before I came across their tea. I am now. I take some me time every afternoon to sit down with my favorite cup and my favorite tea.
So, enough about the tea. OK, one more thing, The Cozy Tea Cart has more than just this kind of tea. I honestly have no idea how many. Too many to count. The reason for this post is to let you know about our wonderful new sponsor AND to tell you all that if our sponsors don't receive a return on their investments to us PCOS women then they won't be sponsors the following year. The Cozy Tea Cart has an online store and they are VERY affordable. So put down that soda and click on over to The Cozy Tea Cart for some amazing tea and some special"me moment". Don't forget, stress only makes our PCOS symptoms worse so you would actually be helping your symptoms as well as Power Up for PCOS if you take just a moment to go get some yummy tea. I have some wonderful, personal experiences with Pregnitude as I have been taking Pregnitude for almost 2 months. So, needless to say, I was ecstatic when they decided to support our fundraiser. I have never felt better in my life.
Information on Pregnitude from the Pregnitude website:
"Pregnitude is a reproductive dietary supplement that helps support ovulatory function, menstrual cyclicity and quality of eggs for women.
Pregnitude is a natural dietary supplement that contains 2 grams of myo-inositol, as well as 200 mcg of folic acid.
- Myo-inositol is a naturally occurring substance produced by the human body from glucose. It belongs to the viamin B complex group.
- Folic acid is a B vitamin that promotes cell growth."
Monika from InCYST Institute for Hormone Health also posted some great information:
And finally, I wanted to let you all know that Power Up for PCOS has a Pregnitude Cysters facebook group:

We've been working hard create a menu of ways you can support our new institute. Hopefully one of them fits your personality and budget. One of our fans mentioned that she is currently unemployed and cannot spend money on a donation. I encouraged her to remember that the most important thing anyone can do is talk about us! Share your experience with us in other PCOS forums…I do not actively solicit business from anyone else in the industry. I do not even aggressively solicit fans or Twitter followers, because I want to know that our fans and followers are there because they like us, not because they didn't know how to say no when we asked them. We grow more slowly that way, but we're more cohesive and connected as a result.
1. If you feel like we're doing something different and important and that we've contributed to your own personal situation, getting the word out really DOES help.
2. If you WOULD like to donate, we've just been approved to collect donations via active.com at this link: http://www.active.com/donate/incyst I've set up a menu of amounts, again, because I want anyone with any amount at all to contribute, to not feel as though we only play with big guns. This whole idea was inspired by one woman who wanted to make a difference, I'm simply following up on that inspiration. Everyone is welcome and appreciated.
3. Please consider joining us at our Marina del Rey fundraiser with Craig Ramsay on August 27. We're going to have a lot of fun! Who wouldn't, at a spa on the beach?
4. If you're further northeast, think about participating in Pick Up the Pace for PCOS Walk-a-Thon in Nashua, NH, on September 17.
This is actually the event that got the entire Institute off the ground, and I would like to see it succeed…wildly!
5. We're currently brainstorming a menu of workshops to offer at our new Santa Monica location, beginning in October. Since the Santa Monica farmer's market is right outside our door, I'm pretty sure we'll be including healthy food at those events. Don't miss out!
Here are friends from our Growing Naturals and Zing Bars sponsors having some fun at the BLANKSPACES launch party last month.
6. Consider shopping in our eMarket. Until Labor Day, 100% of all proceeds will be donated to the Institute.
7. If you own a business with a product/service and a mission compatible with ours (sustainability, hormone-friendly) and you'd like to sponsor something we're planning, please contact me at monika at afterthediet dot com.
8. More is on the way…but if I told you now…I'd have to kill you. Know for now that if it didn't involve fun I wouldn't bother with it!
If you'd like to be kept on the mailing list, please join our Institute fan page or follow our fundraising efforts on Twitter at @moveandsoothe. If you'd like to keep up with what's going on in NH, Beth just joined Twitter as @pickup4pcos. Whatever you contribute, know we're genuinely grateful and will work hard on behalf of hormone research.
I have heard from friends who were at the recent American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference and Exposition in Boston, that a panel of four experts on fats, asserted that omega-6 fatty acids are not pro-inflammatory. This is in contradiction to what you will see on this blog and what we teach, so I wanted to address it.
My primary source of information regarding fats is the International Association for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL). This organization is not sponsored by any commodities organizations with anything to gain or lose from the outcome of good, hard, science.
The American Dietetic Association, on the other hand, is heavily sponsored by commodities and food manufacturers. I actually went to a meeting sponsored by one of their special practice groups a few years ago, the major sponsor of which was Frito-Lay. Over the weekend, Twitter was a-flutter with dietitians aglow from the SWAG they were filling their suitcases with. So much so, that at one point I tweeted back, that for that meeting,"stuff we all get" should be called"food we all get".
This is an association that has backed itself into a huge corner with regards to the money it receives in order to pay its bills. Look hard, and you will find Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Hershey's…for starters. (Actually you don't have to look hard at all…they seem to be proud of these associations.) So you have to understand that if you attend their conferences, you're most likely to get information that is nice, and promotes the sale of the trade show floor of products simultaneously being exhibited in hopes of gaining"official" endorsement. ADA is not going to hurt its sponsors.
Look outside of the ADA and this is what you will see. The relationship between omega-6 fatty acid intake and inflammation is so strong, that Wake Forest University and Harvard University have teamed up to open up a Center for Botanical Lipids and Inflammatory Disease Prevention. Would they do that if they believed they'd be sending renowned scientists on a wild goose chase? I don't think so.
I have posted their mission statement, right off of their website, below.
I ask you to consider, why it is, that there is an international association devoted to research about omega-6's, omega-3's, and inflammation, and a center devoted to the study of these fats, both committed to studying fat, that says that omega-6's are inflammatory, while dietitians are hearing at their meeting that this isn't so? Apparently a little bit of FWAG buys you a whole lot of loyalty.
It doesn't seem to matter what the scientists are saying as long as product gets pushed on the front lines.
Research indicates poor diets, including high concentrations of saturated and omega-6 (ω6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) but lacking omega-3 (ω3) PUFAs, can initiate and exacerbate underlying inflammation associated with cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke), metabolic syndrome, diabetes and asthma. Overwhelming evidence demonstrates that ω3 PUFAs naturally found in fatty fish and fish oil reduce cardiovascular diseases; however, US consumption of fish oils is low due to the taste, smell, and fear of contaminants. This proposal postulates that botanical-based oil supplements offer a potential solution to several of these challenging problems. The Wake Forest Center for Botanical Lipids and Inflammatory Disease Prevention brings together investigators from four internationally-recognized lipid groups and a world-renowned human genomics center to examine the cellular and molecular mechanisms and clinical potential of botanical fatty acids currently available as dietary supplements with a focus on enhancing wellness and preventing disease. Center projects will examine the health effects of adding medium chain botanical fatty acids that bypass the rate limiting Δ6-desaturase step of PUFA biosynthesis in humans. A central hypothesis of this proposal is that this approach markedly enhances conversion of botanical PUFAs to long chain beneficial PUFAs. Projects 1 and 3 examine the mechanisms behind the pleiotropic effects of botanical PUFAs with regard to macrophage/monocyte activation, inflammatory states and eicosanoid generation related to atherosclerosis and asthmatic inflammation, respectively. Project 2 examines differences in PUFA biosynthesis between African Americans and age- and sex- matched Caucasians within both healthy and metabolic syndrome populations to better understand who may be most responsive to fatty acid-based botanical supplements. These interactive and synergistic studies have a strong, contemporary and translational scientific basis and should allow this team of scientist to identify additional targets of prevention and therapy, and permit further refinement of dietary supplementation to maximize its effects on human wellness.
Numerous lines of scientific evidence indicate that poor diets including the ingestion of unhealthy concentrations and ratios of short, medium and long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have played a key role in the initiation and exacerbation of chronic inflammatory diseases including cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke), metabolic syndrome, diabetes and asthma over the past 40 years. The central objective of The Wake Forest Center for Botanical Lipids and Inflammatory Disease Prevention is to test several key hypotheses thatwill fill significant knowledge gaps regarding how fatty acid-based botanical supplements or supplement combinations work to prevent human disease. This information can then be employed to determine the best use and refinement of supplements to maximize their effectiveness for human wellness.
Just a reminder, we've worked SUPER hard on our Nashua, New Hampshire event and even got two sponsors. So not only will you have three dietitians and the PCOS Diva all in the same place at the same time, you'll get a chance to try the high omega-3 barramundi fish and Stonyfield's vitamin D- supplemented yogurt.
And…your registration includes a copy of Hillary Wright's"The PCOS Diet Plan", which she will autograph for you!
This kind of event does not happen every day, so if you're anywhere near Nashua and have been wanting more information about PCOS, it is well worth it to invest in yourself and spend the day with us.
We just chatted on the radio about the event and why we love to work with cysters. Check it out…and come see us on April 1!

Virginia Beach is approaching as well! The registration link is located on the right hand margin of this blog. I'd really love to see you if you're in the area!
You ever have one of those days where everything just seems to come together in the right way? Your hair looks good, your face is clear and bright, your outfit is colorful and flattering, and people are just responding to you in a good way. You’re looking good, and you know it! You FEEL good.
On the flip side, thought, PCOS is there to drag you down when it comes to appearance. We’ve got moustaches, partial and full beards, hair loss, hair in inappropriate places, excess weight (or sometimes not enough weight), acne, skin darkening, skin tags, and other cosmetic indignities galore. How on earth are you supposed to feel good in this body when it’s presenting you with these problems on a daily basis?! Moustaches and muffin tops, indeed!
And that’s just the external stuff. Inside, there are the imbalances that lead to mood swings, depression, and even thoughts of suicide. Insulin resistance, thyroid problems, and other health concerns lurk in the background. All of this can be physically and emotionally exhausting. And when you’re exhausted, it’s easy to give up on appearance. One thing I’ve learned about PCOS is that, although it threatens your physical appearance with masculinizing and unflattering characteristics, you can use positive attention to your appearance to lift your mood.
Part of what I always focus on with my clients is self-care. This may be emotional, spiritual, or physical in nature. I’ve observed that taking time to tend to your appearance as much as reasonably possible (because we don’t want the opposite problem of busting out your budget on shopping, or spending all of your play time at the salon!) results in feeling better. The American Cancer Society sponsors a program called “Look Good, Feel Better,” for women with cancer – it’s a day of make-up application instruction, wig and other hair tricks, and so on – sounds trivial in the face of cancer, but it’s miraculous in how the women respond.
PCOS isn’t cancer, to be sure, but the principles are the same – look good, feel better! I won’t go so far as to say that I “prescribe” pedicures, but maybe I should, and I have in fact recommended them, along with shopping days and other beauty services. Well-tended toes, a pretty top, or some dangly earrings will spark up the girly-girl in most women. For women with PCOS, this is a place that needs a little extra attention. You deserve it.
If there’s something you’ve been neglecting – a haircut, shopping for new bras (yes, you in the stretched out ultra-comfy bra that you haven’t replaced since last year – the one that isn’t doing your breasts any justice at all — I’m talking to you!), doing a wardrobe clean-out and ditching all the unflattering items – it’s a great time to do it. Right now, this very moment. Call your stylist, grab a bag to be filled and donated to Goodwill, or make a call to find out about laser hair removal in your area. Whatever it is, the action will make you feel better.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder that is thought to affect nearly 20% of all females in the world (1 in 5 women). It is a cluster of complicated symptoms that are not the same for every woman. Women can also have symptoms but may not necessarily have cysts on their ovaries. It is believed to be fundamentally caused by insensitivity to the hormone insulin.
We would like to give you an opportunity to show your support again or maybe for the first time to Power Up for PCOS and InCYST Institute for Hormone Health. Your generous contribution will help Power Up for PCOS to continue to support to women with PCOS through educational Power Up Groups and building connections with other PCOS women and to the InCYST Institute for Hormone Health to help fund research about these hormone disorders, especially PCOS and will focus on alternative/nutritional/complementary treatments that are difficult to find funding for.
Please note that Power Up for PCOS is NOT a non-profit organization and any contribution is NOT tax-deductible because of the amount of money that would be required to become a non-profit. We keep only what we need to run and the rest collected is given to inCYST Institute for Hormone Health. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please make your payments to InCYST Institute for Hormone Health through http://www.incyst.com.
We have 3 levels of sponsorship so that you may choose which level best suits your needs. To see the details of each level and to become a sponsor, please visit http://www.powerupforpcos.com/sponsor.
We also welcome sponsors on the local level. If you are interested in providing supplies for one of our local events, like water, healthy snacks, signage and such, please contact us at Info@powerupforpcos.com. We will determine a value and give you the sponsorship level that matches.
Do you have a great product that can help with some of the PCOS symptoms? We are always in search of good items to add to our goody bags to pass along to our fellow PCOS women. Coupons, samples, products and such are welcome. We are providing goody bags to the first 25 women this year plus our volunteers so we are planning on 30 of each item. Please contact us at info@powerupforpcos.com for more information.
Thanks for your generous support!
Thank You,
The Power Up for PCOS Team 810 — 545 — PCOS (7267) http://www.powerupforpcos.com/
I want to take a moment to introduce you to our new sponsor, Green Mountain at Fox Run in Ludlow, Vermont, and explain how this partnership came to be.
Here is an introductory note from Robyn, Green Mountain's dietitian:
Women working to manage PCOS know first-hand that making lifestyle changes to promote better health is often easier said than done. To say nothing of the confusion about what's best to eat. At Green Mountain at Fox Run, you can begin to sort out the confusion and find what works best for you in terms of eating and physical activity with the help of professionals who understand the needs of women with PCOS, and who truly care about helping women take control of their health. Green Mountain offers a comprehensive program that allows women with PCOS to get a taste of how good they can feel while eating healthy and being active.
Here you'll practice healthy living that features foods you like and physical activity you enjoy. Our meals are comprised of high-quality choices such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, legumes, lower fat dairy products, nuts & seeds, and healthy added fats such as flax seed, olive oil & canola oil. We also leave room for “fun” foods to illustrate how healthy eating can be flexible and delicious. Our chefs strive to create exciting meals out of whole foods, with most menu items made from scratch. We offer a conservative level of carbohydrate as part of our balanced meals & snacks for better management of blood sugar and insulin levels. Generous amounts of fun fitness classes offered throughout the day encourage better insulin sensitivity as well.
Our strong focus on education not only guides women in practicing healthy habits while with us, but prepares them to integrate these new habits into their routines back at home.
First of all, I want to tell you that I'm very, very picky about who inCYST partners with, and who it accepts sponsorships from. Companies with products and services to sell see women with PCOS as a very lucrative demographic. That includes fertility centers, diet centers, supplement companies…you name it. With one in ten women in this country having PCOS, that's an awful lot of dollar signs.
It could mean an awful lot of money for a well-visited blog like this, to accept advertising from all of these companies wanting your attention, but that's not how this business is operated. I actually discontinued Google Ads because no matter how hard I tried to filter, I kept getting ads on here that were counterproductive to the message I wanted to project. And more opportunities are declined than accepted.
I also am very selective about who inCYST promotes as a PCOS expert. It's not just anyone you see here, it's someone who has been willing to invest time and money into the inCYST training. A training that is as much about the facts of PCOS, as it is about understanding what it means to go through a health care system with the syndrome and be treated poorly by doctors, dietitians, etc., who give counterproductive advice.
I know I've probably offended a few colleagues who wanted to be included in what we do here, but didn't want to participate in the training as I've outlined it. But this program is about women with PCOS, first and foremost, not about the many entities that want to profit from them.
What that means to all of you is, that you can be assured that professionals listed here and on my website are of a different breed, and that sponsors I choose to include in the inCYST mission have quality services and products, delivered with integrity.
Which brings me to our newest sponsor, Green Mountain at Fox Run. I love them! I actually had an opportunity to spend a week at their Vermont resort a few years ago, and wish that all of you had an opportunity to spend time there. Alan Wayler and Marsha Hudnall, the owners of this fitness retreat, work hard to provide quality programming that incorporates the principles you regularly read about on this blog. Marsha actually took the time to come to one of our professional trainings a few years ago.
Sometimes it helps to just get out of your personal situation and have some time to experience what healthy living actually feels like. Eating well. Moving your body. Sleeping well. Lower stress level. I know there are many people coming to this blog with the search words,"pcos""program". For you and anyone else who simply didn't know this program even existed, I encourage you to check out their website. Their logo will be up on the right if you ever want to come back and click through for information.
Welcome, Green Mountain at Fox Run! I'm so excited that our readers get a chance to learn about your wonderful program!
We're so excited about this! Not just that we have a fundraiser, but that our very first one involves two of our very favorite friends at inCYST, Craig Ramsay and Sandie West.
"Move" with trainer Craig Ramsay, a wonderfully compassionate women's health advocate who we met when he worked with Cyster Stacy Citron on Bravo's reality show Thintervention. He talks mostly about getting you into physical shape, but what we routinely hear from his clients is that his work helps to nurture their self-esteem into good condition as well. He is graciously offering his time to conduct four boot camps on the beach near Sandie's spa, which is where the"Move" part comes in. It's the perfect way to test drive Craig's popular boot camps if you've been thinking about participating but haven't gotten around to it.
Be sure to check out Craig's website and Facebook page to learn more about his"Ultimate Perfect Workout System". And look for him on Twitter at @craigramsay1.
"Soothing" Sandie West has a beautiful facility, Creative Chakra Spa, on the Pacific Coast, just south of the Venice Pier. She's known far and wide for her beautiful space, therapeutic spa treatments, loving spirit, and calming energy. You can't help but put your cares aside and focus on relaxation when you're at Sandie's place! It's perfect for someone who's feeling a little over the top with their diagnosis and in need of little R and R.
To learn more about Sandie's spa and the services and classes she offers, join her Facebook page and follow her on Twitter, @creativechakra.
Check out this video one of Sandie's beach yoga classes. Even the robot that programs our Twitter paper was enthralled…it kept including this video of her beachfront yoga class for several days after she Tweeted it!
These events would not be possible without our wonderful sponsors! Please check out their websites, Facebook fan pages, and follow them on Twitter. They are sponsoring because they are excited to support your journey to PCOS health, and we want to support them in return.
What would our first fundraiser be without one of inCYST's BFF's? The Zing Bars folks don't just support PCOS, they created their products with women with PCOS in mind. Years of combined counseling experience gave them first-hand knowledge about what kind of ingredients, flavors and packaging would be easiest to use and benefit from.
Be sure to"like" them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter at @zingbars.
Growing Naturals is a brand of organic brown rice protein that is vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, kosher, non-GMO, organic, and raw diet-compatible. It's a great option for anyone with PCOS, and especially so for anyone who is vegan and/or with food intolerances that make it hard to get enough protein.
When I first learned of them, I thought to myself…"That pretty much touches all bases…finally, I know what to recommend for even the most restrictive of situations." Turns out, their tag line is"Finally, Food For All People".
Be sure to check out their website and learn more about their original, chocolate, and vanilla rice protein isolate powders.
You can find Growing Naturals on Facebook, and their Twitter handle is @growingnaturals.
If you'd like to participate in person, please RSVP either here in the comments section, or on our Facebook event page with at least a"maybe" so we can send you the registrations later this week.
If you can't make it but you'd like to support this fundraiser, here's a link where you can donate. You'll be supporting research projects directly supportive of hormone disorders including PCOS, infertility, thyroid, and diabetes.
We are working out the details and will have complete registration options available at this link. Space is limited for each of the options so if this is something you're interested in doing, please grab your space as soon as possible.
Please, if you can't participate in our specific event but you're interested in the boot camps and/or the spas, check out Craig's and Sandie's websites for more information about their programs.
We'll have a website up and running soon with event details. Please be sure to join the RSVP list on our Facebook event page so we know where to find you when updates occur.
If you would like to donate but cannot make it to the live event, please click here for more information.
I make Tuesday nights my housecleaning nights so I can watch this show and keep up with what my clients are learning about weight, nutrition, and exercise. This is the 6th season…and it wasn't until recently, while reading a colleague's blog, that I learned that this show even had a dietitian.
Never once have I seen this dietitian interact with the contestants. Never once have I seen her be given credit for any of the meal plans the contestants follow. In fact, I've seen an ad on the program about supplementary nutrition material viewers can purchase that is credited to the show's physicians. And you know what? She's not only a dietitian…she's a professional chef!!! Why is Rocco getting more air time?
I think Bob and Jillian, the trainers, are great trainers. But every single time they start to talk about food…it's a product placement opportunity. Watch for that next time around. Tonight it was about jello and milk, which turned out to be program sponsors.
Has the dietitian been silenced because she'd talk about all foods and not just the ones financially supporting the show?
It just doesn't seem fair, as much as the show is about nutrition, that the nutrition expert has been relegated to be completely off camera and not be given credit for much of the work she apparently does.
I wish this person would get the credit she deserves. Maybe if she did, the food information would feel less like poor attempts at sneaking more advertising time into the show and more like information that has some scientific basis.
Cheryl, I hope some day you get to come in front of the cameras and be rightfully acknowledged for everything you clearly do.
We are offering a 10% Discount on all Zing Flavors, good through Dec 31.
For those of you who prefer to order online, enter the coupon code ‘december’ at checkout.
Thank you all for your support this year, it has been a pleasure working with you. We are looking forward to new Dairy & Gluten free flavors early in 2009, so please stay tuned.
