FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Phoenix Creatives Team Together To Promote Health, Fight Hunger

PHOENIX, Arizona (July 13, 2012) – Monika Woolsey, a local dietitian, announced the official launch today of Hip Veggies, an educational collaboration between artists and food professionals. This project, which will also benefit local foodbanks, will highlight food and health-related artwork created by local artists.

Each artist contributing to the project will be showcased on a limited-edition, screenprinted, reusable canvas shopping bag bearing an image of their art. Artists committed to the project thus far include Sebastien Millon, Joe Ray, Marisa Hall, Hugo Medina, Christine Cassano, Rafael Navarro, and Gennaro Garcia. Each artist’s piece is a representation of a locally produced food. Included with each $20 purchase is a brochure with information about both the artist and the food item they have depicted, including recipes.

One-third of profits from this project will be donated to local food banks. In addition, each bag will contain information about participating in the Arizona Science Center’s plastic bag donation program, which collects used plastic shopping bags to be converted into sleeping mats for local homeless.

“I’ve always believed that one big reason people don’t eat more fruits and vegetables is that their growers do not have the marketing budgets of other foods,” explained Woolsey. “I’ve also noticed through my work in supporting the arts, that creative people do enjoy food and drink. I realized, for them, it’s just another art medium, and decided to team up both groups in a way that simultaneously addresses several community needs.”
